Planning & Designing for the Natural Infrastructure
SESSION I & II: THURSDAY-FRIDAY, AUG. 28-29, 9 am - 5 pm, NASHVILLE DOWNTOWN
LIBRARY
The NEIGHBORHOOD and COMMUNITY SCALE: Light Imprint Integration of
Sustainability and Urbanism
The development
industry is transitioning away from conventional suburban development
towards
the growing demand for development of compact, mixed-use,
pedestrian-friendly communities. At the same time environmental,
sustainable, and
green practices are moving to the forefront of public interest. While
sprawl leads to excessive land use and automobile dependency, compact,
mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly communities using light imprint tools
offers a sustainable alternative and reconciles development industry
requirements
with objectives of land conservation organizations.
Light Imprint
(LI) is a transect-based stormwater management system for neighborhood
scale
planning, design, and green space. LI introduces a tool set for
stormwater runoff that uses natural drainage, conventional engineering
infrastructure, and infiltration practices. These tools are to be used
collectively at the Greenprinting sector, neighborhood, and block and
building scale. This tool set offers a range of environ
mental
benefits, while significantly lowering construction and engineering
costs.
LI is not limited to a single approach for environmentally sensitive
development. Rather, it offers a set of context-sensitive design
solutions that ultimately work together on the community level.
Light Imprint
(LI) development techniques can give added consideration to
environmental and
preservation factors without comprising design priorities such as
connectivity and the public realm. LI respects terrain, geographical
conditions, and topography while prioritizing public spaces. LI is
available as a handbook and website, with a sixty-tool matrix,
searchable
database, and four case studies that will be presented and provided at
this two-day workshop.
SESSION III: FRIDAY, Oct. 10, 9 am - 5 pm, NASHVILLE DOWNTOWN LIBRARY
The NEIGHBORHOOD and REGIONAL SCALE: GreenPrint Resources and Strategies
for
Conserving Our Region's Land, Water, Cultural and Natural Resources
Comprehensive
community and regional planning is not complete without considering the
value
of our natural resources to the local economy, environment and quality
of life. Cumberland Region Tomorrow, in conjunction with the Tennessee
Wildlife Resource Agency and several key partner agencies, is
completing a Regional GreenPrinting Pilot Project that will create a
comprehensive
GIS-based decision making tool that can be used by local and state
planners, as well as design and development professionals, to ensure
access to and
knowledge of critical lands for conservation in the CRT region. By
identifying and focusing on maintaining important open space and
ecosystem
functions, the CRT Region can minimize the cost of built infrastructure
and provide critical open space resources for many years to come. GIS
information currently available in the TWRA Tennessee Wildlife Action
Plan will serve as the base layer, with other critical layers being
added to
comprehensive GIS data products that will be presented and provided at
this one-day workshop.
