Regional Visioning and Scenario Planning

From 2001 to 2003 CRT engaged 500+ residents of our region to define future growth patterns and create information from which we can make more informed choices about our region’s future. Efforts from the Regional Visioning Project produced one of the first national models for successful regional scenario planning. CRT continues to use those findings today in community education and outreach. Our Regional Visioning Project—Report to the Region—findings continue to guide our regions’ strategies and recommendations for future growth and development in Middle Tennessee. We offer technical assistance and education for partnering regions interested in regional scenario planning and quality growth implementations.

Quality Growth Toolbox

The CRT Quality Growth Toolbox provides planning tools and resources to aid decision makers in implementing Quality Growth Principles and Practices focusing on:

  • Defining Quality Growth in the Cumberland Region
  • Reinvesting in Towns, City Centers and Communities
  • Creating a Variety of Housing Choice
  • Land Use and Transportation Planning
  • Conserving our Region’s Land, Water, Natural, and Cultural Resources, and
Guiding Infrastructure Investment for Sustainable Growth
  • Ensuring Economic Vitality through Quality Growth
  • These copyrighted resources are available on our website and have been used by numerous Middle Tennessee city and county governments to create, adopt, and implement a new standard of practice in comprehensive planning and implementation strategies, tools, and resources.

    Quality Growth Workshops and Training

Using our network of resources and expertise, CRT offers quality growth education, community workshops, and training sessions for local community leaders and elected officials. These sessions provide needed professional education and certifications and help local leaders and policy makers to understand the importance of effective planning and how they can apply quality growth principles and practices in their communities in support of local needs and objectives.

GIS Greenprint Tools for Quality Growth

The first of its kind in Tennessee, CRT released the GIS Greenprint: Tools for Quality Growth 3.3 in 2010. This web-based document helps planners, developers and designers in our ten-county region use GIS mapping in determining which lands are best suited for certain uses. Land types such as: agriculture, conservation, recreation, transportation, residential, natural and cultural resources and pre-existing development are included. Version 3.4, released in 2012, includes expanded GIS data layers in partnership with state-wide agencies.

    POWER OF TEN

CRT convenes annual POWER OF TEN Regional Summits which brings together local, regional, and national leaders from the business, government, design, planning, and non-profit communities to discuss our Six Issues of Regional Importance.

CRT, along with Nashville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, The Middle Tennessee Mayor’s Caucus, and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce served as the lead applicants for Middle Tennessee’s 2011 HUD Regional Planning Grant Application. CRT’s future role in this effort will be leadership in regional visioning efforts, technical assistance and implementation, communicating to the public, and capacity building and resources (as described in the 2011 HUD application).

    Speakers Bureau

An on-going program, the CRT Speakers Bureau allows CRT Board of Directors, staff and partners to speak and engage with local community residents about the importance of regionalism and quality growth planning. The Speakers Bureau also provides updates on the Six Issues of Regional Importance and reports on successful collaborative actions across our CRT Region.

    Tennessee Regions’ Sustainable Communities Roundtable

CRT is currently in the organizational phase of creating the Tennessee Regions’ Sustainable Communities Roundtable. The purpose is to bring together public, private, and philanthropic leaders and organizations across the unique and diverse regions of Tennessee. This new state-wide network will advance joint regional Sustainable Communities efforts through knowledge and resource sharing, education, communication, and collaborative efforts.
